I was freelancing for 5 years when corona broke out and the world went on lockdown. Until then, I had done wonderful projects in marketing, communications and copywriting. Happy clients, generous sales and I was always full. My projects did keep going when corona started, but social obligations and physical appointments fell away. I finally had time to reflect on myself and my business. I could give space to a little voice that had been in the background for a long time: that I was working in a reactive way, that I was not at all happy with what I was doing and that I had to find out why.

Until then, I was working and living in the delusion of the day, which made it easy for me to mute that little voice. Sure, I had made some changes to boost my work happiness. Finally, I had made a shift in the industry I focused on, set up a web agency and made my work location-based. But I hadn't gone back to basics.

Formulate dream life? Just finishing this project first.

Marketing to myself? I had no reason to be visible and vulnerable when my schedule was usually full anyway.

Sales? No cheese about it, introductory meetings were mostly just discussing project proposals.

Fortunately, I did make a move in a number of ways. I managed to do that without losing my creativity, with focus and in a way that suits me (because you can feel that soon enough!). As a result, I now have energy in abundance and have been able to get so much out of myself and my businesses.

I grant you that too. I know how it feels when Monday always comes too soon. I know the tension of going from "I have to" to "what do I really want?" And I also know how great it feels when the penny finally drops and I can look back on the past few months with pride, especially the moment when I made the choice to invest in myself.

With what background am I telling this?

Over the past 9 years, I have gained expertise as a marketing professional in various entrepreneurial and leadership roles. For example, I ran a web agency focused on companies with a positive impact, where I handled the strategy and web copy myself and worked with a freelance team for design and web development.

I gained extensive experience in marketing strategy, team management and communication as an interim marketing manager, for example at an IT company, video marketing company, sustainable beauty company and a governing body of the Dutch government. It went from strategy to execution and from informal to formal.

As a freelance copywriter, I’ve written for many different brands over the past six years—from festival websites to private hedge funds and from architects to coaches.

I also organized networking events in Rotterdam under the name SCALE010 and currently organize monthly co-working days for Qommunity, at The Sweet Spot in The Hague, helping other cities set up their events as well.
